Waikawau Tunnel Beach is one of the most unique coastal spots in New Zealand — and the only place in the country where you reach the beach through a hand-carved tunnel.

The tunnel was dug by hand in the early 1900s to allow cattle to pass between farmland and the beach. Today, it’s a short and fun walk for visitors, starting from the end of Waikawau Beach Road.

As you step through the narrow, twisting tunnel, you’ll emerge onto a wild black-sand beach backed by dramatic cliffs — a perfect reward after the short stroll.

The whole experience takes only 10–15 minutes each way, but plan extra time to explore the beach and its rock pools.

📸 Photography tip: The tunnel makes for an incredible framing shot, especially at low tide when you can safely explore more of the beach. Bring a wide-angle lens to capture the tunnel’s full curve, and aim for sunset for soft light on the cliffs.
