In Zanzibar, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been working with health authorities to address the critical need for medical oxygen supplies. A countrywide assessment revealed a lack of functioning infrastructure, leading to hospitals having to buy expensive oxygen from commercial suppliers. With WHO's support, Zanzibar repaired its only oxygen production plant at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital, ensuring a stable supply for seven health facilities across the island. This initiative has provided a lifeline for critically ill patients in need of oxygen and sets the stage for long-term plans to expand and modernize oxygen production facilities.
