Mensaje de Jan In Iceland

Hafursey is a stunning palagonite mountain on the north side of Mýrdalssandur, split by Klofgil Gorge into Skálafell and Kistufell. Back in the day, farmers from Hjörleifshöfði used it for year-round sheep grazing and had cave Sel / shelter there until 1854. Fun fact: during the 1755 Katla eruption, six brave souls sought refuge in the cave at Hafursey, leaving their signatures on the wall as proof of their survival.

  • good area for hiking and exploring if you have an extra time

  • not often visited and accessible with 4x4 (check with your rental if you're allowed to drive it here)
