I instantly fell in love with Hveradalir when I first visited and I think you will too. What's even better is that it's one of the coolest and most easily accessible highland locations. I can't recommend it enough if you want to explore part of Iceland's remote highlands.

While I still love Landmannalaugar, Hverdalir geothermal area is just as beautiful, easier to get to, and so much fun to explore.

Along with being one of the largest geothermal areas in Iceland, Hveradalir's beauty is marked by the rhyolite mountains, glaciers, and ranges of yellow, orange, red, and green color that make this landscape look like a painting.

What makes this area so easy to access is that you don't have to cross any rivers to get here. You must drive a 4x4 car that is insured for driving on F-roads in Iceland, so make sure to check that with your car rental company. Hveradalir geothermal area is part of the Kerlingarfjöll mountain range. On your way to this area, you will pass gorgeous mountains, lakes, and even a gorge that will blow your mind. You might even spot some Icelandic horses on a horseback riding tour.

The F-roads, specifically the Kjölur mountain pass (F-35 and F347 for Hveradalir) also can be used to access other parts of the highlands, but if you only go to Hveradalir you will not be disappointed.

Due to all of the geothermal activity, the steamy landscape gives a mysterious feeling. The ground is like clay and can be very muddy, so sturdy hiking boots with good grip is a must. Be prepared to have muddy shoes when you get back to your vehicle.

One of my favorite things about this area is that you can spend as much or as little time here as you want, and still get an amazing photo or video. There are various paths to choose from, so explore all you want.

My one caveat is that the water temperature can be extremely hot, so please stay on the paths.

While you can make a day trip out of this, there is also the option to stay in the Kerlingarfjöll mountain resort overnight.
