10 Things I’d Tell a Friend Before Visiting Budapest
If a friend asked me for quick, honest Budapest advice before their trip, these are the 10 things I’d tell them first.

If a friend told me they were going to Budapest for the first time, these are honestly the things I’d tell them right away - the little tips that make the trip better, help avoid touristy mistakes, and make the city feel even more special.
1. Wake up early at least once.
If you only do one early morning in Budapest, make it Fisherman’s Bastion at sunrise. It’s one of the most magical experiences in the city, and it feels completely different without the crowds.
2. Don’t pay for every “premium” viewpoint.
This is especially true at Fisherman’s Bastion. The free terraces are already amazing, and in my opinion, you really don’t need the paid upper section.
3. The best Parliament view is not from in front of Parliament.
If you want the iconic photo, go to Batthyány tér on the Buda side. That’s the classic postcard view and honestly one of the best spots in the city.
4. New York Café is worth it - but for the atmosphere, not the food.
It’s expensive, and the food isn’t the best you’ll have in Budapest, but the interior is beautiful. If you go in with the right expectations, it can still be worth doing once.
5. Keep your Danube cruise simple.
If you’re mostly doing it for the views, a basic sightseeing or evening cruise is usually enough. The skyline is the highlight, not necessarily the dinner.
6. Don’t overplan every hour.
Budapest is one of those cities that’s best when you leave some time to just walk. Some of the nicest moments are crossing a bridge, strolling along the Danube, or wandering through a neighborhood without rushing.
7. Margaret Island is worth it if you want a calmer break.
If the city starts to feel busy, head to Margaret Island. It’s peaceful, green, and perfect for a relaxed walk. You can also rent bikes there if you want to explore more.
8. Try traditional Hungarian food at least once - properly.
Don’t just stop at the first touristy restaurant. One of my personal favorites is Gettó Gulyás - I’ve been there three times and always order the goulash soup.
9. Choose your thermal bath based on your vibe.
Széchenyi for the iconic first-time experience, Gellért for beautiful interiors (but check renovation updates), and Rudas if you want something more atmospheric and a little different.
10. Budapest is beautiful at night.
Don’t go back to your hotel too early. Whether it’s a Danube walk, a cruise, or just seeing the Parliament lit up, the city becomes even more special after dark.
If I had to sum it up in one sentence: Budapest is best when you mix the iconic sights with a slower pace, a few honest choices, and at least one sunrise.
