Perched high above the valley near the edge of the Wapta Icefield, Bow Hut is one of the most iconic alpine huts in the Canadian Rockies. Located at about 2,350 m (7,700 ft) elevation, the hut serves as a basecamp for mountaineering, glacier travel, ski touring, and exploring the vast Wapta Icefield. Access involves a challenging 8 km (5 mile) hike one way with roughly 400–500 m of elevation gain, usually starting from the Bow Lake trailhead along the Icefields Parkway. The route follows a trail past Bow Glacier Falls before climbing onto the moraine and eventually reaching the hut with spectacular views of Bow Glacier and the surrounding peaks.

Bow Hut is operated by the Alpine Club of Canada, and reservations must be made through the Alpine Club of Canada’s website. The hut can accommodate about 30 guests and provides bunk beds, a cooking area, propane stoves, and basic shelter, but visitors must bring their own food, sleeping bag, and personal gear. Staying here feels like stepping into a true mountaineering basecamp high in the Rockies.

From Bow Hut, there are several incredible alpine objectives. Many climbers use the hut as a starting point to explore the Wapta Icefield or to summit nearby peaks such as The Onion, which offers panoramic views across the glaciers and surrounding mountains. The hut is also part of the classic Wapta Traverse, a multi-day ski or mountaineering route connecting Bow Hut with other backcountry huts like Peyto Hut and Balfour Hut. In winter and spring it becomes a popular destination for ski mountaineering, while in summer it attracts hikers and climbers looking to experience a remote alpine environment.
