Higashiyama Ward is one of Kyoto’s most traditional and walkable areas, known for its historic streets, temples, and classic old-Japan atmosphere.

This is where many first-time visitors picture when they think of Kyoto stone lanes, wooden buildings, small tea houses, and viewpoints that overlook the city.

The best way to explore Higashiyama is on foot, linking together temples, shrines, and neighbourhood streets at a relaxed pace. It can get busy through the middle of the day, so starting early or visiting later in the afternoon makes the experience feel much calmer.

If you’re short on time, this area lets you see several of Kyoto’s most iconic spots all within one connected walking route.

Things to know and places to visit:

  • Home to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, one of Kyoto’s most famous landmarks

  • Walk the historic streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka

  • Stop by the Yasaka Pagoda (Hokan-ji Temple) viewpoint

  • Easy walking distance to Gion and Yasaka Shrine

  • Expect hills and lots of walking wear comfortable shoes

  • Best visited early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak crowds

  • Plenty of small cafés, matcha dessert spots, and souvenir shops along the way
