The Fajardo Bio Bay is inside a natural reserve, and its bioluminescence is considered among the best in the world (and the brightest bioluminescent bay on the main island of Puerto Rico). There are only four bioluminescent bays and one lagoon in the world- making this a truly rare bucket-list experience.
The Tour
Tours are typically two hours and fully guided at night, starting with a kayaking safety briefing. You paddle on a tandem kayak (2-seater) for about 1.5 miles through mangrove channels before reaching the glowing lagoon. Upon entering the lagoon, a wide expanse of gentle, rippling water surrounded by mangrove forests greets you, with the mountains of El Yunque Rainforest towering in the distance.
Best Time to Go
The bio bay is best seen on the darkest nights of the lunar cycle. During a full moon, the reflection of moonlight on the lagoon’s surface makes it difficult to see the bioluminescent organisms.
