There are several hiking trails on Jebel Shams, but the most famous one is the Balcony Walk.

This cliffside route follows the edge of the canyon and offers panoramic views of Wadi Ghul. It genuinely feels like walking along a natural balcony, carved into the side of the mountain (which is exactly where the name comes from).

The views are unreal from start to finish.

The full round trip is about 7-8 kilometers (return) and will take you around 3 to 4 hours, depending on how often you stop. The trail is super easy to find - just follow the red/white/yellow flags!

NOTE: at what looks like the “end” of the official trail, many hikers turn around. However, the path actually continues a little further uphill beyond this point (see picture). If you keep going up the rocks carefully, you’ll reach a small natural pool area tucked into the canyon. It’s a quieter spot and often less crowded than the main trail section.

Things to Know

  • Only about 10 minutes’ drive from the wild camp site

  • Despite being easy and mostly flat, the hike feels adventurous because you’re walking along the edge of a massive canyon with no guardrails. It could feel intense if you’re uncomfortable with heights.

  • Best done at sunrise or early morning for optimal lighting - although the way back WILL be hot as the sun rises. If you want to avoid the heat completely, it's better to go in the afternoon, as this side will be covered in shade by then.

  • Bring enough water, as there are no facilities on the trail.
