Hermannsdalstind, the tallest peak in western Lofoten, stands at 1,029 meters and offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Lofoten’s rugged peaks and fjords. Despite the demanding trail, which involves steep, muddy sections and a significant elevation gain, the summit rewards hikers with unparalleled panoramas. The route crosses the scenic Munkebu Hut at the halfway point, making it an ideal spot for a break or an overnight stay.

Starting point: To start the hike, head to Sørvågen and turn right about 500 meters after passing through the village toward Å. Park in the paid lot located between Lake Sørvågvatnet and the school. The parking fees are 100 NOK for cars and 200 NOK for motorhomes from 8 am to 3 pm, and 50 NOK for cars and 250 NOK for motorhomes from 3 pm to 8 am. Payment is cash-only, so be sure to come prepared. Use these coordinates for the lot: 67.889834, 13.017908. From here, the well-marked trail begins, offering clear navigation to your destination.

Route: The trail to Hermannsdalstinden begins at Sørvågen and ascends gradually through scenic terrain, including several lakes such as Sørvågvatnet and Studalvatnet. It involves both well-marked sections and more rugged paths. After reaching the Munkebu Hut, an excellent rest point, the route continues downhill to a saddle near Tennesvatnet and Fjerddnasvatnet lakes. From there, the trail passes Krokvatnet, the last reliable water source, and ascends gently to Hill 448.

Beyond Hill 448, the trail skirts a rocky outcrop rather than summiting it, continuing along narrow paths with some exposure. The path leads to a plateau with small ponds, providing a brief reprieve before the ascent steepens significantly. This challenging ridge involves chains and ropes for assistance in climbing sections that can be slippery when wet. After the ridge, you cross a grassy plateau before tackling a boulder field to approach the summit. The final stretch is marked by faint red dots and cairns that guide through loose scree to Hermannsdalstinden’s peak, which offers breathtaking views of the Lofoten Islands, fjords, and distant peaks.

Difficulty according to Norwegian standards: Black = Suitable for experienced hikers with good stamina and high knowledge.

Distance: ≈ 23 km
Elevation gain: ≈ 1800 meters up & down
Duration: ≈ 12-13 hours

Tip: Turn your hike into a multi-day adventure by spending the night at Munkebu Hut. After conquering Hermannsdalstinden, enjoy a well-earned rest at the hut before tackling the descent the following day. For an extra challenge, consider summiting Munken before heading back.
