Piroa Falls is one of my favourite waterfalls in Northland and a must-see if you’re passing through Waipu.

Most of the time, you have to work for a good view. But the track to Piroa Falls is only 200 metres long and starts from the side of the gravel road. It’s not a hard walk, and the track is well maintained, but there are a few stairs, and it can get slippery after rain. I'd recommend wearing shoes, though Mathew did it in jandals, so you’ll probably survive either way.

Once you reach the base of the falls, you'll find a clearing with a picnic bench. Piroa Falls is a popular swimming spot in the summer too, so bring your togs (swimming costume, etc) and a towel.

How to get there

Piroa Falls is located just north of Waipu and close to the Uretiti DOC campsite. I recommend making a detour here when you're in the area! If you're travelling north, turn left off State Highway 1 and you'll meet a gravel road. Continue driving until you see a gap in the bush on the right-hand side of the road and a sign for Piroa Falls. There is no carpark, so you'll have to park on the side of the road.

Please be extra careful when you're getting in and out of your car, especially if you're travelling with children or can see other traffic around.
