Five Rivers Café is a rustic little café, farm, and art gallery tucked away in Mossburn, between Queenstown, Invercargill, and Milford Sound.
If the weather is lovely and sunny, they have a huge outdoor area where you can sit back, soak up the sunshine, and enjoy a coffee.
One of the most popular things on the menu is the Southland Cheese Roll, which is a delicacy in this part of the world. I’ve never quite understood why, as it’s essentially white bread smothered in a cheesy mixture made from evaporated milk, packet soup mix, onion, garlic, and cheese, then baked in the oven. I had one once, and don’t get me wrong, it was delicious! But it’s basically just a rolled-up cheese toastie. That said, when in Rome, right?
