Ponta do Mistério is a rugged stretch of coastline on the northern side of Terceira, between Agualva and Quatro Ribeiras. The volcanic scenery here feels raw and almost surreal — black basalt cliffs, hidden inlets, and the Atlantic crashing with full force against the rocks. The name, “Point of Mystery,” couldn’t be more fitting.

What makes this place even more special is that it’s also part of the official hiking trail PRC 02 TER. Walking this section of the trail, you follow paths along the cliffs with open views of the ocean, a highlight that shows Terceira’s volcanic side at its rawest. At the same time, you don’t need to hike the whole route to see it — Ponta do Mistério can also be reached by car, following a dirt road that leads directly down to the coast.

Another reason why this location stands out is its potential for photography. The combination of rugged lava cliffs, the deep-blue Atlantic, and wide horizons makes it an excellent spot for drone shots — especially at sunset, when the light turns the coastline golden and the contrasts become even more dramatic.

I would describe it as an off-the-beaten-path location. On its own, it’s worth a short stop to feel the atmosphere and breathe in the ocean air. But as part of PRC-02, it becomes one of the most memorable points of the entire hike — a place where nature, solitude, and the force of the Atlantic all come together.
