Learn Basic Tunisian Arabic

Did you know Arabic wildly differs from country to country? While most Tunisians will understand Arabic from most countries, it’s wise to know some key Tunisian Arabic words. Not only will they help you get by, but locals are always super happy to hear someone use Tunisian-specific words. That was the case for us, anyway! Here are some basic Tunisian Arabic words to get you started:

  • Aslema - Hello

  • Bislema - Goodbye

  • Ayshek - Thank you

  • Ay - Yes

  • Le - No

  • Shwaya - A little

  • Barsha - A lot

“Marrajeya” Is an Important Word to Know

Of all the Tunisian Arabic words to know, one word came in more handy than most: Marrajeya. Pronounced Mar-a-JAY-a, this word is an absolute godsend, especially when you’re in a souk. While the souks in Tunisia are definitely a lot less pushy than those in other Arab countries, the word “marrajeya” can get you out of such situations. This word basically means, “Next time.” With this word, you’re telling the seller you’ll “come back.” It’s a polite way to get them to stop selling you something.

If You Don’t Know Arabic, Brush Up on Your French

Don’t worry if your Arabic is not up to par. You can get around pretty easily in Tunisia with some knowledge of French. If you don’t know French, English is more widely spoken amongst the younger generations. But typically, you’ll need to know some French to get by. We don’t speak a high level of French by any means, but we got by with some basic phrases and numbers (for haggling and understanding prices).
