Once a thriving Roman city, Dougga housed up to 10,000 people in the 2nd century AD. Due to its remote location, it is incredibly well preserved and is considered the best-preserved Roman town in North Africa.

Carthage, the most famous Roman city in Tunisia (located near Tunis), was almost completely destroyed. All that remains are a few rocks and the shells of ancient buildings.

But Dougga is a completely different story. Many of the original structures are still standing. You’ll be able to walk on original Roman roads, enter massive temples, and even see how the ancient locals lived in their homes.

Better yet, the ruins are VERY off the beaten path. Most tourists who visit Tunisia don’t make it to Dougga simply because it’s pretty difficult to get to. During our visit to Dougga, we didn’t see more than 10 people as we walked around the ruins for 2 hours.

Dougga is one of the most impressive Roman ruins we have ever seen and was one of our favorite places we visited in Tunisia during our 1-month trip around the country.

The entrance to visit Dougga costs just 8 TND, which is less than $3.
