Ingapirca is considered the most important pre-Columbian archaeological site in Ecuador. It's situated in the Cañar province and houses the best preserved Inca architectural complex of the country. Ingapirca means “wall or fortress of the Inca” in the Kichwa language. This four hectare archaeological complex dates back to 500 AD, when it was inhabited by the Cañari people. After years of occupation by various tribes, this became an important political, religious, scientific, military and administrative centre for the Inca civilization. During the Inti Raymi festival (the festival of the Sun), visitors can enjoy a variety of cultural celebrations such as music, dance, artisans and delicious cuisine. This magical place also has guides who speak Quichua, English and Spanish, so come explore this incredible piece of history!
