The Illinizas are a pair of amazing twin volcanic mountains located in the north of Latacunga, Cotopaxi, Ecuador. Standing tall above the landscape, Illiniza Sur stands slightly taller than its northern counterpart, Illiniza Norte, with heights of 5245 meters and 5126 meters respectively. This incredible duo of volcanoes attracts mountaineers and hikers from around the world and is even considered to be excellent for acclimatization to altitude. Its first recorded ascents were made in 1880 by Jean-Antoine Carrel and Louis Carrel on Illiniza Sur and then in 1912 by Nicolás Martínez and Alejandro Villavicencio on Illiniza Norte. Along the peaks lies a rustic refuge which has all the necessary utensils and amenities needed for a comfortable stay before or after summiting Illinizas. With its breathtaking views, challenging climbs, and stunning wildlife, this is one destination that should not be missed. Regarding climbing difficulty, it's one of the few technical mid-mountains of Ecuador.
