Mjóifjörður is an isolated and beautiful hidden gem in the East Fjords of Iceland. Its dramatic and picturesque landscape makes it a great spot if you're looking for a unique experience away from other tourists. The village of Mjoifjordur offers visitors a glimpse into Iceland's history as the fjord was the site of the biggest whaling operation in the world at one time, and you can still visit the remains of the whaling station today. Other nearby attractions include stunning waterfalls, a WWII US Navy warship wreck, and more. Definitely one of my favourite places in Iceland.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: One of the most remote fjords in the East

  • Best season: Summer (it does become inaccesable for a few months during winter).

  • Best time of day: Any.

  • Nice to know: I would recommend you drive all the way to the end of the fjord before you leave. And say hello to Villi, the local dog (black and white Border Collie), from me!
