Weather
Tasmania’s weather can change within minutes, especially in mountainous areas. Although Tasmania has seasons, you can still experience all four seasons in one day.
You can be lucky and get mild, completely clear days in winter, but you can also experience snow in summer in the mountains. In August, Tasmania often experiences storms, which can even lead to power outages in remote areas. It’s important to always be prepared for all kinds of weather. Bring winter clothing even on a summer trip. When you go hiking, make sure to have plenty of layers and waterproof clothing.
Unfortunately, there have been fatalities in Tasmania recently because hikers didn’t wear appropriate clothing. So please take this seriously!
General Safety Tips
Tasmania has a lot of wildlife, which means animals are often on the roads. Drive carefully and try to avoid driving in the dark if possible. Especially in rural areas, you will see lots of wildlife near the roads, which can be dangerous both for them and for you and other drivers.
When you go out for a hike, always make sure to bring enough food and water. Most parts of Tasmania are very remote, and there are no shops or restaurants in the national parks. Always be prepared for the hike to take longer than expected and bring extra supplies.
Before attempting a hike, look up the length and difficulty. Make sure you have the experience and the right amount of time to finish it. This is especially essential in winter when daylight is limited!
