This war memorial is dedicated to those who lost their lives in World War I. It also honors veterans from other conflicts like World War II, Borneo, Korea, Malaya, and Vietnam. Designed by William Gummer and Frederick Gurnsey, the bridge features symbolic elements like a cross, torches, coat of arms, and lions. The archway was unveiled on Armistice Day in 1924 and underwent repairs after the 2011 earthquake.

The Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial, also known as Oi Manawa, is a place in Christchurch to remember the devastating earthquakes of 2010/2011. It honors the 185 lives lost, those injured, and the community's resilience during the recovery. The memorial features a reflective park area and a wall inscribed with the names of the deceased, providing a peaceful space for reflection and remembrance. It's a beautiful spot by the Ōtākaro/Avon River where visitors can pay their respects and find solace amidst the tragedy that changed the city forever.

Pro tip: take an Uber or the public bus. The base station is located a 15-minute drive from the city center. Catch public bus #8 departing from the City Bus Exchange, Litchfield Street which takes you directly to the Gondola. Visit on a sunny day. We visited in the afternoon and it was very quiet (around 3-4 PM).
