Hovedøya kloster is a unique and captivating medieval abbey located on the island of Hovedøya in Oslofjord near Oslo, Norway. Founded on 18 May 1147 by monks from Kirkstead Abbey in England, the monastery has been rebuilt throughout the centuries and is now recognised as an important norwegian archaeological site. Today, visitors can observe the ruins of the traditionally built Cistercian construction, with its distinct Romanesque style church and Gothic features. Aside from being a captivatingly beautiful place to visit, Hovedøya kloster has also played an important role in Norwegian history and was once one of the richest institutions in Norway during the medieval era.
