Hólesvingane is an ancient cultural activity that has been practiced in Norway since the Viking age. This unique form of dance is accompanied by a traditional fiddle called a 'hardanger fiddle'. The steps and movements of Hólesvingane (also known as Holeswinging) involve improvised twists, turns and stampede hops performed with grace and rhythm. Similar to tap dancing, this style of Norse dance creates intricate patterns which are beautiful to watch and often done in unison as a group. Not only does it require superb coordination and balance but also musicality to ensure that everyone stays together. Traditionally in Norway, the participants sing while they dance and even use their hats for percussion during the performance. Today, Hólesvingane is kept alive by passionate folk-dancers from all areas in Norway, performing at different events throughout the year!
