What is it?- Altyn Arashan is a lush alpine valley surrounded by snow capped peaks, known for its secluded hot springs. It has recently become popular with tourists, making it one of the most visited places in this region.

How do I get here?- There are two main ways to reach Altyn Arashan, depending on your time and fitness level:

1. Hiking (Budget-Friendly, Scenic)

  • Take marshrutka #350 from Karakol to Ak-Suu village (≈30 SOM).

  • From the village, follow signs toward Altyn Arashan and head right onto the dirt road trail.

  • The hike is roughly 15 km one way and takes 5–6 hours, depending on your pace.

  • The trail gradually ascends alongside a river and offers beautiful views the entire way.

2. 4x4 Jeep Ride (Fastest Option)

  • Hire a local driver with a Soviet-era military jeep through a tour agency in Karakol.

  • The cost is approximately 8000 SOM per car (one way), and it can fit up to 4 passengers.

  • Note: Rental cars are not permitted, and attempting this road in a standard vehicle is highly discouraged. The track is rocky, steep, and frequently washed out.

What do I do here?- Soak in natural hot springs – Many guesthouses have private wooden bathhouses fed by naturally heated mineral water.

  • Day hikes and horse treks – Explore the surrounding forests, rivers, and alpine meadows.

  • Start or end a multi-day trek – Altyn Arashan is often used as a base for:

    • The Ala Kul Lake → Altyn Arashan → Karakol route (or in reverse)

    • Treks deeper into the Karakol Valley

  • Wildlife spotting – This region is home to eagles, marmots, and (rarely seen) snow leopards.

Where do I stay here?- While not many accommodations are listed online due to the lack of cell service and internet, there are plenty of options on arrival:

  • Family-run guesthouses

  • Yurt camps during summer season

  • Tent camping if you bring your own gear

Prices are usually affordable (1,000–2,000 SOM per night) and include simple meals. Some guesthouses allow same-day bookings if you arrive on foot or by jeep.

How long do I need here?- Depending on your route, 2-3 nights should be plenty of time to soak in the beauty of Altyn Arashan.
