On my visit to Karangahake Gorge, I decided to do the Windows Walk, which has a wonderful mix of history and nature. Unfortunately, part of the trail was closed when I went, so definitely check ahead before heading out.
The full walk is a short and sweet 2.4 km, making it super family-friendly and great for any fitness level. The trail winds through lush forest and past old mining relics, but the real highlight is the series of rock-carved “windows” that frame stunning views of the gorge. It’s the perfect way to soak in nature while getting a glimpse into the area's mining past.
