If you hit this hike at the right time, it’s easily one of the best waterfall experiences in the entire Bay Area.

But timing is everything. Cataract Falls is a series of gorgeous cascades that follow Cataract Creek as you climb through a shaded forest on the north side of Mount Tam.

The catch? It’s seasonal. So you have to plan accordingly.

After heavy winter rains, the trail absolutely comes alive with multiple cascades and lush green surroundings. In dry periods, it can slow to a trickle and lose a lot of what makes it special. The hike itself is short but deceptively tough: 2.9 miles round trip with over 1,000 feet of elevation gain. It’s a steady climb with enough incline to make it feel like a real workout.

Important Strategy Notes

• Go after recent rain. This is the difference between an average hike and one of the best in Marin.

• Take your time. Spend a few moments at each waterfall. They're all unique and beautiful.

• Start early. Parking along Bolinas-Fairfax Road is limited and fills quickly.

• Expect a climb. It’s short, but the elevation gain is real.

• Stay on trail and out of the water. This feeds into a domestic water supply.
