Believed to be messengers of god, the bowing/ sacred deer is unique to Nara and calls for the perfect day trip from Kyoto/Osaka! Majority of the deers are resting and roaming around the deer park and there is a small stall selling crackers here too. However some of the male deer could get aggressive while you're feeding the deer so here are some tips to help you have an enjoyable experience:

  • Be sure to only keep one cracker in your hand at a time (rest in the bag or pocket) and avoid feeding a herd of deer (they bite/ nudge harshly/ can get aggressive)

  • There are plenty of deer throughout the park, feel free to feed any individual one that approaches you or the deer slightly away from the main park which can get quite crowded and busy

  • Buy deer crackers from shops and stores around, avoid expensive ones from the vending machines
