Set between 2 glaciers in the west highlands of Iceland, Hveravellir offers breathtaking scenery and great outdoor activities. Extending up to the foothills of Langjökull glacier Hveravellir is a geothermal hotspot with smoking fumaroles and bubbling water holes.
This is a good area to visit on your way to/from Kerlingarfjoll and North Iceland. Google Maps calls the road here an F-Road, F35. Though no river crossings exist to get to Hveravellir from either direction, I highly recommend a 4x4 vehicle, any size will do with careful driving. In the winter the road can become impassible so be sure to check road openings and conditions before attempting a visit to Hveravellir. Also, account for a significantly longer drive time than what Google Maps says since you will not be able to drive very fast.
If you want to play it safe and be in a well-equipped, photogenic car, then you should rent an old-school Land Rover Defender from www.isak.is. Use the code "gunnar" for renting your Defender on a special price.
