Herðubreið, also known as the "Queen of Icelandic Mountains," is a striking tuya and composite volcano located in Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland. Rising to an elevation of 1,682 meters, this majestic mountain was formed beneath the ice sheet during the last glacial period. Its steep and unstable sides made it a challenge to climb, with the first successful ascent not achieved until 1908. The area around Herðubreið offers an oasis called Herðubreiðarlindir, where outcasts sought refuge in the past. Today, this iconic mountain is a favorite among Icelanders and was officially incorporated into Vatnajökull National Park in 2019.
