From Car Guards to Card Tips â Navigate like a Local

South Africa is super easy to navigate once you know the basics â whether youâre hopping in an Uber, road-tripping along the Garden Route, or taking a domestic flight. Hereâs the lowdown:
Uber everywhere. Reliable, safe, and convenient for city trips. Skip street taxis.
Rent a car for road trips. Perfect for exploring at your own pace. Heads up: South Africans drive on the left!
Car guards (informal parking attendants). Youâll often find them watching over cars in lots or on the street. A tip of R5âR10 when you leave is customary â think of it as cheap parking insurance.
Gas stations. Full service! Attendants pump your gas, wash windows, and check oil/tyres. Tip R5âR10 if you like (âAdd 5 rand for yourselfâ).
Private transfers. Ideal for safaris or long distances â book in advance for comfort and safety.
Domestic flights. Carriers like FlySafair, Cemair, and Airlink connect major hubs. Airlink is slightly more comfortable, but all are reliable.
Luxury trains. For a once-in-a-lifetime journey, splurge on the Blue Train or Rovos Rail â old-school glamour with breathtaking scenery.
