Further information:
The Martha Mine has an impressive and interesting history of becoming one of the world's most important gold and silver producer mines. The technological advances made by the mine are incredibly impressive and have had a lasting impact on its success over the years. The mine is currently owned by Australian-based OceanaGold, and exploits low grade ores to produce approximately 100,000 ounces of gold and 700,000 ounces of silver each year. In addition, it boasts New Zealand's main industrial monument in the form of the Cornish Pumphouse, which was relocated 300 meters away from its original site in 2006 due to subsidence risks. Those curious can visit the Pumphouse and enjoy its historical significance during daylight hours.
