The Akaroa Lighthouse is a historic building that not only symbolizes the importance of sea transport to Akaroa's history, but also serves as an exciting reminder of the ingenuity of 19th century engineering. Built in 1878-79 to a design by John Blackett specifically for New Zealand conditions, the six-sided wooden lighthouse was moved from its original site on a rugged headland at the entrance to Akaroa Harbour, over 80 metres high, down to its current home on Cemetery Point. In 1980, the Lighthouse Preservation Society re-installed the salvaged historic equipment in the light house.Today, the Akaroa Light House stands as a beacon of New Zealand's maritime past, proudly illuminating the way for all who pass!
