The Großer Illing near Ohlstadt is a lesser-known peak offering peaceful trails and fantastic views of the surrounding Bavarian Prealps. It’s a great alternative to more crowded summits like the Heimgarten or Herzogstand, especially if you're looking for a quieter hiking experience.

Start your hike at the trailhead parking lot at the end of Heimgartenstraße in Ohlstadt (note: the lot fills up quickly, especially on weekends). From there, the trail leads past the Kaltwasserfälle (Cold Waterfalls) and over the Kleiner Illing toward the main summit. The hike takes about 1.5 to 2 hours one way, covering 3 km and 530 meters of elevation gain.

The route is moderately steep in sections but not technically difficult. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful panoramic views of the valley and distant peaks.

You can either return the same way or make it a loop by descending on the opposite side, following the signs back toward Ohlstadt.

There are no huts or restaurants along the way, so be sure to bring enough water and snacks. As always, wear sturdy shoes, and note that although the terrain is not high alpine, surefootedness is important in a few rocky sections.
