The Basalt Church of Reykjavík
Hallgrímskirkja is a towering and impressive Lutheran parish church that dominates the skyline of Reykjavík, Iceland. The church stands at a height of 74.5 meters, making it one of the tallest structures in Iceland.
The design of Hallgrímskirkja was inspired by the country's unique landscapes, particularly the basalt lava columns found throughout the country. The exterior of the church is made of concrete and is patterned to resemble the hexagonal shapes of basalt rocks. The interior of the church is relatively plain, with white walls and a simple altar.
The church is named after Hallgrímur Pétursson, a famous Icelandic clergyman and poet. A statue of Hallgrímur Pétursson stands in front of the church, and visitors can take an elevator to the top of the tower for panoramic views of Reykjavík and its surroundings.
