This unique spire, formed from bentonite clay, rises dramatically from the surrounding landscape, offering a surreal and otherworldly appearance. Long Dong Silver Spire is a striking desert landmark located approximately 7 miles west of Hanksville, Utah, along Highway 24.

Getting There

To reach the spire, head west on Highway 24 from Hanksville. Approximately 7 miles out, look for a dirt road on your right (north side). Follow this road for about a mile until you encounter a "cross-country travel prohibited" sign, indicating the end of vehicle access. From this point, it's about a 1-mile hike to the spire. Alternatively, you can park along Highway 24 and hike the full 2 miles round-trip if you prefer not to drive on the dirt road.

Camping Options

  • Dispersed Camping: BLM-managed lands in the area allow free dispersed camping. There are no fees or permits required, but a 14-day camping limit applies. Please follow Leave No Trace principles and pack out all trash.

  • Duke's RV & Campground: Located in Hanksville, this campground offers tent camping with amenities such as restrooms, showers, and Wi-Fi. Pets are allowed in the RV and tent camping areas, provided they are kept on a leash .dukesslickrockcampground.com

Photography Tips

The best times to photograph Long Dong Silver are during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. The soft, warm light enhances the spire's features and creates dramatic shadows in the surrounding landscape. Midday sun can be harsh and may wash out details, so early morning or late afternoon is ideal for capturing the spire's unique structure.

Drone Use

Drones are permitted in the area around Long Dong Silver, as it is outside of restricted zones. However, always check current FAA regulations and local guidelines before flying. Be mindful of other visitors and wildlife, and ensure that your drone activities do not disturb the natural environment or other people in the area.

Access and Vehicle Requirements

The road leading to the trailhead is a dirt path that is generally accessible by medium-clearance vehicles under dry conditions. However, after rain, the road can become muddy and challenging to navigate. In such conditions, a high-clearance or 4x4 vehicle is recommended to avoid getting stuck . If the road is impassable, consider parking at the Highway 24 pull-off and hiking the additional distance.

Weather Considerations

The weather in this region can be extreme, with hot summers and cold winters. During summer months, temperatures can soar, so it's essential to carry ample water, wear sun protection, and avoid hiking during peak heat hours. In winter, temperatures can drop significantly, and snow or ice may make the trail slippery. Always check the weather forecast before your trip and prepare accordingly.

Final Thoughts

Long Dong Silver Spire offers a unique and memorable experience for adventurers seeking solitude and natural beauty. With its dramatic appearance and remote location, it provides excellent opportunities for photography, hiking, and camping. Remember to respect the environment, follow all regulations, and enjoy the tranquility of this remarkable desert landmark.
