Before any trip, it is really important to have specific apps and maps downloaded prior to your trip. There are our top suggesions

Googlemaps

  • You will want to have offline maps downloaded of area you are visiting on your trip. Googlemaps is great because you can access the downloaded maps without reception. Several roads do not have reception in the Rockies so this is very important! Googlemaps is the best offline map for roadtrips

Maps.me

  • You also want to have offline maps downloaded for maps.me. This is the best mobile app for hiking directions in this area. If you ever get lost on a hike, this is your go to source.

I overlander

  • Ioverlander is a great app to check for camp sites and free spots to stay overnight. The sites listed in the app tell you everything such as cost, amenities, tips, etc.

Uber

  • We always make sure that we have Uber installed on our phone prior to a trip because sometimes you can only verify the app in your home country. Uber is used in the Rockies in the towns like Banff and Jasper and is a ride sharing app.

    PeakFinder

  • This app makes it possible to find out what mountain you are looking at! It shows the names of all mountains and peaks with a 360° panorama display. This functions completely offline - and worldwide!

    Skyview

  • One of the coolest apps for stargazing. Just point your phone's camera at the night sky, and the app will identify what you are seeing!

    Alltrails

  • I personally really like to use Alltrails to find trails in the area I am in and to look up stats of hikes. I have included almost all of the hikes in the guides, but alltrails does have an offline map and it is a good app to track the hikes you have done, look up trail conditions, and read reviews on hikes.

    Weather Network

  • This app is the best weather app in Canada. The Rockies has notorious unpredictable weather, so always make sure to check the weather for the day. There are also a lot of summer thunderstorms, so make sure it is lightning free before embarking on a hike! We have learned this the hard way and it can be scary. If you are at elevation and thunder is rolling in your best bet is to head down.

    Windy

  • This is a great wind and weather forecast app. It is particularly good for checking visibility and incoming weather patters. I always check at least two apps for weather before heading out.

    Spotify or Apple Music

  • Make sure you have playlists, audio books or whatever else saved offline! Many highways like the Icefields Highway has no reception and barely any radio@
