What was once a plain seawall has transformed into a vibrant tapestry of culture and marine life 🎹🐠. We loved seeing the transformation take shape and even did some photoshoots of the talented artists.

The Marae Moana Mural is the longest mural in the South Pacific, stretching an impressive 562 meters along the Nikao seawall. This masterpiece showcases the unique biodiversity and cultural heritage of each of the Cook Islands' 15 islands, featuring 33 bird species, various marine life, and traditional motifs. Led by our friend, artist Gonzalo Aldana, with contributions from local artists, the mural took nearly two years to complete, turning a once somber wall into a celebration of life and conservation.

Located just outside Rarotonga's airport, it's one of the first sights to greet visitors, offering a vivid introduction to the nation's commitment to preserving its ocean through the Marae Moana marine park. It's a free, must-see attraction that beautifully blends art, culture, and environmental awareness.

Tip: This is a great spot to watch the plans land!! Just park up by the superbrown supermarket end and walk down to the back of the airstrip. You can pop into the airport and see what time planes are landing or jump on the Rarotonga airport website for flight times. we LOVE to do this activity.
