Penedono is an ancient and historically fascinating municipality situated in Norte, Portugal. With a population of 2,952 living on a total area of 133.71km2 as of 2011, this picturesque region can trace its origins back to the Stone Age when the Dolmen culture made its mark in the region. During the Middle Ages, King Sancho signed a foral at the end of the 12th century to include new settlers and provide privileges to any renegade knights. More than four centuries later, during the reign of King Manuel I of Portugal, the last foral was granted, setting a tax of 2,970 réis paid by the residents and the municipality to the local alcalde. In the present day, Penedono remains a delightful rural getaway to explore and celebrate the region's unique history.
