Pigeon Island National Park, nestled off the coast of Nilaveli in Sri Lanka, stands as a marine sanctuary of remarkable beauty. Renowned for its crystalline waters, colourful coral reefs, and diverse marine life, it ranks among the premier snorkeling destinations in Sri Lanka.

The park consists of two islands, with the larger one surrounded by a coral reef teeming with colorful fish. 100 species of coral and 300 coral reef fish were recorded in the area. Sea Turtles and Blacktip Reef Sharks are also commonly seen in the shallow water around the island.

You can take a bout trip from Nilaveli or Uppuveli Beach. Your Hotel or Guesthouse may arrange a tour for you which usually takes up to 4 hours.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT: the months between May and September. Otherwise due to the monsoon the sea is too rough for snorkelling.

DO be aware that unfortunately, in the past, due to over-tourism and poor management, the coral reefs around the island have suffered extensive damage.

DON'T be afraid to visit it anyway: there are positive signs of restoration. The Pigeon Island National Park Authority has created ‘no-go zones’, which they have cordoned off to prevent any further damage and to encourage rejuvenation. In addition to protect this extraordinary place better, the entrance price per person is now around 40 Euros per person.
