Ebenalp, at 1,640 meters, is a very popular starting points for hikes in Appenzell. With its breathtaking views, fascinating historical sites, and well-connected trails, it’s an ideal destination for both casual visitors and experienced hikers.

The easiest way to reach Ebenalp is by taking the cable car from Wasserauen, which offers a short but scenic ride with panoramic views of the Appenzell countryside. However, if you prefer a more rewarding challenge, the hike from Wasserauen to Ebenalp is a fantastic alternative.

The steep 3.7 km trail ascends nearly 900 meters, taking around 2.5 to 3 hours. The route winds through dense forests and alpine meadows before reaching the plateau at the top.

Once at Ebenalp, there are plenty of highlights to explore. One of the most famous attractions is the Wildkirchli caves, a site where prehistoric humans once lived. Following the caves, the trail leads to the Berggasthaus Äscher, the iconic cliffside guesthouse known for its dramatic setting and hearty Swiss dishes. The short walk from Ebenalp to Äscher takes about 15–20 minutes and is one of the most scenic trails in the Alpstein.

Seraina’s Tip: Ebenalp is also a fantastic starting point for further hikes, including routes to Seealpsee, Schäfler, and even Säntis. The summit itself is a popular spot for paragliding, with pilots launching off into the open sky above the Appenzell valleys.
