HOW LONG IN EACH CITY?

This is one of the biggest mistakes people make when planning Japan: trying to treat cities like simple checkboxes.

Japan

Some cities need time. Others work better as short stops.
Below is how I recommend structuring your time so the trip actually feels good, not rushed.

TOKYO — 5 TO 7 DAYS

Tokyo is not one city. It’s more like 10 cities in one.
Each neighborhood has its own rhythm, atmosphere, and energy.

Shibuya, Asakusa, Shinjuku, Shimokitazawa, Kichijoji, Daikanyama…
They don’t feel interchangeable, and that’s why Tokyo needs time.

Another reason to stay longer: Tokyo is the best base for day trips.
Nikkō, Kamakura, Yokohama, Ghibli Museum… all easy from Tokyo without changing hotels.

If you rush Tokyo, you don’t “see more”, you just move more.

Tokyo works best when you:

  • explore neighborhoods by area

  • mix busy days with slower ones

  • keep flexibility for weather, energy, and spontaneous plans

Ideal if you like variety, food, city vibes, shopping, photography, culture, and a bit of everything.

KYOTO — 3 to 7 DAYS

Kyoto is very different from Tokyo.
It’s not about density, it’s about pace.

Yes, there are many must-sees.
But Kyoto isn’t meant to be rushed from temple to temple.

The magic is in:

  • walking quiet streets early morning

  • slowing down in temples and gardens

  • discovering cafés, backstreets, and less obvious areas

I know FOMO is real. Most people want to “see everything”.
That’s exactly why Kyoto needs breathing room.

A good rhythm:

  • 3 to 5 full days in Kyoto itself. I'll personnaly consider 5 days in Kyoto to be the best. There's lot of areas and a lot to experience, this way you can see a lot without too much rushing.

  • 1 day trip (Nara or Uji)

  • 1 buffer day to explore less-touristy districts or repeat a favorite area like : Kurama, Ohara, Heiei-san.

Ideal if you love culture, history, old streets, calm moments, and beautiful scenery.

OSAKA — 2 TO 3 DAYS

Many travelers skip Osaka. I think that’s a mistake.

Osaka is raw, loud, funny, and full of energy.
It’s street food, arcades, neon lights, and a very different personality from Kyoto.

You don’t need a long stay, but you do need at least some time.

2 days works if you want:

  • Dotonbori

  • markets

  • nightlife

  • city vibes

3 days gives you space to:

  • add Universal Studios

  • or take a day trip (Kobe, Himeji, Mount Koya, Minoh)

  • or just slow down and enjoy the city properly

Perfect for food lovers and people who want to feel modern, energetic Japan.

Other cities

If you have more time, the goal isn’t to add cities randomly.
It’s to change the rhythm of the trip.

Here are additions that work well without breaking the flow:

  • Hiroshima & Miyajima — 1 or 2 nights
History, nature, slower pace, very meaningful stop. 1 or 2 night is perfect for the city highlights.

  • Kanazawa or Takayama — 2 nights - 4 nights
Old town vibes, traditional streets, great contrast with big cities. 2 nights in each city is the best to enjoy the full atmosphere & make some day trips to : Hida Furakawa, Ainokura or Shirakawago.

  • Kinosaki Onsen — 1 to 2 nights
Hot spring break, reset your body and energy mid-trip.

  • Tokushima — 2 to 3 nights
Less touristy, local Japan feel, good if you want something different. Consider renting a car to explore this area.

  • Takamatsu : 2 nights

You'll get the city highlights (garden, temple) and day trip to the many islands it's connected with : Shodoshima, art island like Naoshima, Teshima.

  • Okayama / Kurashiki : day trip from Osaka or 1 night is great

You'll have time to epxlore Kurashiki bikan historic center & Okayama castle and Korakuen.

  • Nagoya — 2 nights
Convenient stop between regions, underrated, very livable city.

  • Hakone — 2 nights
Nature, onsen, Mount Fuji views, perfect transition after Tokyo.

  • Fujiyoshida or Fujikawaguchiko— 1 to 2 nights
It also work as a day trip, but when you have time & rent a car there's a lot to explore in this area.

  • Nagano : 2 to 3 nights

You'll have the time to explore shirnes and temples (togakushi, zenkoji) and small towns (Obuse) or Shibu Onsen. I'll consider and advise you to sleep in Shibu onsen.
