Now here's a window view to write home about!

It's fair to say that Warnscale bothy is quite literally a hidden gem. Upon your approach it's easy to miss the camouflaged bothy which is neatly nestled into the slate hillside overlooking Haystacks, Crummock Water and Buttermere. Inside, the dwelling is basic with a raised platform that can accommodate 2-3 people and a small wood burner. The view from the window however really steals the show, perfectly framing Buttermere and Crummock water below, you simply don't get views much better than this.

In terms of getting to the Bothy, the quickest route is from Honister Slate Mine National Trust car park, postcode: CA12 5XN. The path starts with a fairly steep incline, but is well signposted and soon evens out, taking you all the way along to Dubs Hut where you can stop for a tea break if you require a breather (see Dubs Hut post for more info). From here, navigating your way to Warnscale Bothy gets a little trickier as there is no clear path. Head down past Dubs Hut and to the left of the path you will see a route that takes you down to a river crossing. This consists of some stepping stones so do be careful in the rainier months when the river is fuller. From here you will want to follow the path around to the right. This will lead you to more stepping stones. Once you have crossed these you now want to take a fork off to the right rather than heading straight up which is where the main path will take you. As you take the right hand fork the path will become less clear. Keep walking around the headland and slightly downhill and keep your eyes peeled. At some point, off to your left you will find Warnscale bothy tucked into the hillside. To your right you will be treated to truly incredible views across Buttermere and Crummock water. Now it's time to rest and take it all in.

The total hike should take around 1h15 or so.

Don't forget: Take supplies - you will need to take your own fuel for the stove, food and sleeping equipment. Ensure you leave the bothy as you found it so others can enjoy it too. Or even better, leave a little something (non perishable) behind for the next guests.

Safety: Due to its stunning location Warnscale bothy can get quite busy meaning you may arrive and find there is no space to stay the night. Come prepared for this eventuality, either with a tent, or with plenty of time to get back to your car before sunset.
