Tromsø, Norway

I get many messages every month from people asking me for things to know before visiting Tromsø. So thought it would be beneficial to you to create a travel tip listing my main pointers to make your trip planning easier.

Language

Norway's official language is Norwegian, but you’ll have no problem getting around in English. Almost everyone in Tromsø speaks English fluently and will be happy to help if you need directions or advice.

Currency

Norway has its own currency called "norsk krone " (the Norwegian Krone, NOK). Before you arrive, it’s good to check the current exchange rate with one of the many currency converter apps available.

Cash

You’ll rarely need cash in Tromsø. Locals pay for everything using cards or mobile payment apps. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and all major credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere. Just note that American Express isn’t commonly used due to higher transaction fees.

Tipping

Tipping in Norway isn’t required nor expected. Service charges are already included in prices, but if you feel someone went above and beyond, rounding up the bill or leaving a small tip is always appreciated.

Water

Tap water in Tromsø is exceptionally clean and fresh—it comes straight from the surrounding mountains. Bring a refillable water bottle and skip buying bottled water!

Weather

The weather in Tromsø can change quickly, no matter the season. Winters can be snowy and dark, while summers bring long days of midnight sun. Always check the latest forecast at www.yr.no or www.storm.no before heading out, and dress in layers.

Clothes

For detailed suggestion on what to pack check out my other travel tips called:

What to pack for winter & What to pack for summer
But in short: think warm, waterproof, and windproof.

Electricity

Electricity in Norway is 230 volts. If you’re traveling from North America or other regions that use different plug types, remember to pack an adapter for European outlets (Type C or F).

Wifi

Tromsø has excellent internet coverage, including 5G in the city center. You’ll find free wifi in most cafés, hotels, and even some buses. For longer road trips or remote adventures, you can buy a prepaid SIM card with data from companies like Telenor, Telia, or Ice at convenience stores or gas stations.

I hope this list helps ease your mind. I have no doubt that your trip to Tromsø will be unforgettable—whether you’re chasing the Northern Lights or enjoying the endless summer daylight!
