The iconic New Mosque, also known as Yeni Cami, stands tall and proud in the bustling Eminönü district of Istanbul, Turkey. Originally named Valide Sultan Mosque, its construction began in 1597, ordered by Safiye Sultan, wife of Sultan Murad III. Despite its lengthy construction process of over half a century, the majestic building was fully completed in 1663 and opened for worship in 1665 after being damaged from the Great Fire of 1660. The incredible structure is a stunning example of the Sultanate of Women period in Ottoman Empire, with 66 domes and two minarets, and a centre dome measuring at 36 meters (118 ft) high! On top of being awe-inspiring from the outside, the interior also boasts exquisite Iznik tiles, grand marble piers to hold up the majestic dome, a royal loge, and an accompanying library. Aside from providing a place of worship, the mosque complex also houses a hospital, primary school, and the well-known Spice Bazaar. It has become one of the Istanbul's must-see destinations since its inauguration and will surely take your breath away!
