🌊 Glacier River Mouth
🗺️ How to Get There:
From Route 1, join the Route 85 until it becomes Road 851, a gravel track. Follow it past Þóroddstaðarkirkja church until it brings you all the way down to the beach where the glacial river meets the sea. The road becomes sandy and rough near the coast, so a 4x4 is strongly recommended, especially after rain. There's no infrastructure, but you can park near the edge of the beach for drone launching.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Late spring through early autumn (May to September) offers the most reliable access.
Low tide reveals the full texture of the river delta, and calm weather is ideal for safe drone flying. Expect no crowds, this place is largely unknown but one of the best in the country for this kind of photography.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Midday to afternoon when the light enhances the river’s color contrasts
Clear, windless days give smoother ocean textures and better drone control
Even works in flat light, emphasizing patterns and abstraction
Recommended gear:
Drone is essential to appreciate the full river delta and ocean convergence
Bring multiple batteries, as you’ll want to cover the area thoroughly
ND filters help manage exposure in bright conditions
Composition ideas:
Fly overhead for abstract river patterns and ocean mixing lines
Use the dark beach and curving river shapes for leading lines
Shoot top-down to emphasize geometry, or angled shots to catch the coastline
In the right conditions, reflections and textures become key compositional tools
