Its history is intriguing and in fact this steep staircase owes its name to a legend. It was entirely built in one night by the soldiers of the King of Aragon when they invaded the city in 1420. But it also seems that the staircase was built centuries earlier to reach the drinking water of the ancient well of San Bartolomeo (now no longer accessible for safety reasons).
