In case you are driving around Iceland in summer, you really only need a 4x4 by when you go into the highlands (on the F-roads). Other than that, you will be fine with a regular 2x2 car.

In winter you actually also don't really need a 4x4, but I personally feel more comfortable in one when there is a lot of snow or ice. So I would recommend taking a 4x4 that time of year. But if you are used to snow and feel fine in a regular car, that is fine as well. And in winter, all cars in Iceland (both regular and 4x4) have spikes in their tires, so you will have a lot more grip on the road when it is icy.

For some reason I love Icelandic churches. They are so small and cute and all have something unique. This one for example has a really cute colorful tower!

Iceland is on both the North American and Eurasian tectonic plate. These two plates meet at this exact place, so technically you can walk from the Eurasian tectonic plate to the North American one.

The bridge itself is more of a symbolic one between the two continents, but it is definitely interesting to visit this spot and read about the geology in Iceland.

This geothermal area is not very big, but it is still worth it. The colors are amazing and the boiling water is spraying up really high and makes quite a spectacle.

And the view of the lighthouse in the distance also makes it quite special I think.

This lighthouse is situated in a very beautiful location. From the geothermal area you can already see it, but when you get closer to it, you can also see the hill that it is one. I think it makes for beautiful pictures.

If you've seen the movie "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga", you might remember the scene of Will Ferrel and Rachel McAdams at the cliffs playing keyboards.

If you like cliffs and birds, this is a spot for you. The views are beautiful and there are plenty of birds. But unfortunately bird populations are not always doing well and therefore there's a monument for the great Auk, which is extinct.

This pool is not for swimming, just for looking at. It is formed by the waves hitting the rocks and looks amazing. But like I said: not for swimming :P

Just across the road from Krysuvík, you'll find this beautiful lake. I love the color of the lake combined with the colors of the mountains in the background.

These sulfur fields to me always feel out of this world. And the smell is pretty intense too (think of rotten eggs).

But even though it does not smell particularly nice, I think you should not miss out on this place! You can walk around the whole area, but of you just want a quick peek, you can already see a lot a short walk from the parking area.

This church is located right next to the sea. From the parking lot you can walk to the sea or to the church. Both views are beautiful.

The fact that the church is so close to the sea is not a coincidence. The story goes that some sailors in the 12th century were trying to get to land, but the coast in this area is very dangerous. They prayed to God to get to land and they would built a church in that spot. And so they did.

The statue next to the church also has to do with this story, it is called "Landsýn" meaning "Land in Sight".

O, and there are also some elf houses next to the church.

One of the many caves you can visit in Iceland! This one is only 40 minutes from Reykjavík, so it's a perfect trip if you are staying in that area. And it's also a great activity for a rainy day!

Minimum age is 3, so this can be a fun family activity as well.

Hveragerði is known for it's greenhouses and therefore making a Greenhouse hotel makes sense as well. Of course it is not an actual greenhouse, but it definitely has that green vibe.

The combination of people that stayed there was interesting to me. Half of the people were a bit older and probably expected a real green house, the other half where a bit younger "hipster-ish". And I think it's a nice place for both those groups.

The food from the food hall was very nice and great quality. The room was also nice and had a lot of fun details.

The Greenhouse hotel has seven restaurants and a bar in its food hall, ice cream and a small food market. There's also an Icelandic designers store. So if you want some souvenirs, this is the perfect spot to get some.
