What you'll do
Traveling in Iceland with kids is absolutely no problem. Iceland is a very kid friendly country and many tours are perfect for kids as well.
Icelanders include their kids in everything. Some restaurants for example will have an area where kids can play and it is usually no problem to add a baby crib to a room. And many towns will have a playground for kids with a "bouncy hill" they can jump on.
And there are many fun activities that kids can enjoy as well. In this itinerary I've made a list of all the fun things kids can join in on. It is not like a regular itinerary because you can not do all of these things in one day, but you will have a list to choose from.
Day 1
On this day you will find all options that are fun for younger kids (0-8)
Reykjavík Park and Zoo
Touristique
Icelandic zoo
In zoo's in other countries you will find all kinds of exotic animals. In this zoo you will only find animals that already live in Iceland. So if you want to see seals, goats, sheep, horses, reindeer or bunnies, than this is the place to be.
This is a perfect place if you are visiting with kids that are interested in animals!
The Skrimslis
shop
Wool monster souvenir workshop
The Skrimslis of Iceland is a quirky workshop where you can create your own wool monster souvenir.
I think this activity is perfect for all ages. So bring your kids, grandma or best friend and make your own souvenir. Me and my friend did the workshop together and we had so much fun designing our own little monsters. Mine will be traveling through Iceland with me from now on.
You don't need to be a creative genius to make your own monster. So just choose all your favorite colors, patterns etc. and blend them together into a cute little stuffed animal.
Icelandic Horseworld
tournées
Horse stable visit
If the weather is not great, but you would like to know more about Icelandic horses this might be the perfect tour for you.
During the stable visit you will learn about Icelandic horses; their gaits, what makes them special and you get to see them up close. It's the perfect tour for families traveling with young children (children under 12 are free) or people that are a little insecure around horses.
When visiting with young kids you can also add a riding lesson to the stable visit.
Efstidalur Restaurant
restaurant
Restaurant above a cow stable
I know it might not sound very tempting to eat above a cow stable, but it is actually quite fun to see the cows from your table. Especially for kids, this is a fun extra!
The food is as local as it gets. And don't forget to try their ice cream as well!
Raufarhólshellir
tournées
Raufarhólshellir
One of the many caves you can visit in Iceland! This one is only 40 minutes from Reykjavík, so it's a perfect trip if you are staying in that area. And it's also a great activity for a rainy day!
Minimum age is 3, so this can be a fun family activity as well.
The Commonwealth farm
culture
Recreated farm
This is a reconstructed viking-era farmstead. It was built in 1974 as a part of the national celebrations of the 1100th anniversary of the settlement of Iceland in 874.
It is a historically accurate reconstruction of three buildings, including a longhouse, which used to be 7 km to the north at Stöng. You can still visit the ruins there as well.
You can visit the reconstructed farm and experience the medieval and way of life. You can wear medieval clothing and play cards in the hall. It's a fun way to learn about Icelandic history.
Caves of Hella
tournées
Caves of Hella
Unlike many other caves in Iceland these are not necessarily interesting for their geology, but more for their cultural significance. This historical site is Iceland's oldest archaeological remains.
Kids under 5 are free. And for 2 adults and 2 kids (6-15 year) they have a special deal too. So this is a perfect family trip.
Reindeer Park
activité
Meet Rudolph!
Want to meet Rudolp? Or actually there are two Rudolps at this place and they are called Mosi and Garpur.
If you want to see Icelandic reindeer from close by, this is the place to be!
Vogafjós Farm Resort
restaurant
Cows inside a restaurant
In case you like too look at cows while having a meal... This is the place to be!
Okay, it sounds a bit strange, but it is actually quite fun. This farm and restaurant have combined their two businesses and now you can have a look at how their cows live. You can even go and pet them (and the calves) if you like.
Petting Zoo Daladýrð

Icelandic zoo in north Iceland
In zoo's in other countries you will find all kinds of exotic animals. In this zoo you will only find animals that already live in Iceland. So if you want to see goats, sheep, horses, pigs or Icelandic foxes, than this is the place to be.
It's the perfect spot if you are interested in Icelandic animals. They have a lot of information and a lot of animals for you to see and some you can pet as well.
They are open all year round. I went there on one of the coldest days of the year and beside watching the animals I also enjoyed some really good waffels and tea :)
This is a perfect place if you are visiting with kids that are interested in animals!
Kjarnaskógur
Randonnée
Walk in the forest
Do you know the joke about Icelandic forests? If you haven't heard it yet, and you are planning to visit Iceland, I guarantee you will hear it a few times.
It goes like this: "What do you do when you get lost in an Icelandic forest?" .... "You stand up"
Icelandic forests are not that old and the trees are still pretty small. But over the years they have grown a lot, so this joke almost does not work anymore for many forests in Iceland.
But still, don't expect to find a forest with massive trees. But you will find a fun area for kids to play in, you might see some bunnies and you just get to enjoy a great scenery along the way.
goHusky Dogsledding Tours
tournées
Dogsledding
Dog lovers, this is the place for you! Right along the coast north of Akureyri you'll find a pack of huskies and their owners.
You can visit them to pet the dogs and take awesome photos of them, go for a walk with the dogs in the gorgeous forest (all year). Or you can go dogsledding (January - March).
Fun for the whole family!
