The Ala Kul Trek near Karakol has become one of the most popular hikes to do in Kyrgyzstan. The 55-km adventure takes hikers through Karakol Valley, up to the stunning Ala Kul lake, and then down to Altyn Arashan, a hot spring village.

Over 3-4 days on foot, you’re rewarded with some of the most incredible views you can possibly imagine. The highlight is Ala Kul lake, a high-altitude alpine lake at 3,500m sitting in a bowl of mountains in the Terskey Alatau range.

There are a few different ways to hike the route. You can do it completely independently, which is what I did with two friends. We carried camping gear and all our own food for the four days (we hired our camping gear in Karakol). The other option is to utilise the yurt camps along the way, where you can pay for a bed and food. There's also the option of organising a guided trek with a guide, and they can look after your logistics for you.

Distance: 55 km one way

Time: 3-4 days although I highly recommend taking 4 days to give yourself enough time to enjoy the trek

Difficulty: Moderate-hard the trail is demanding with steep, rocky climbs and descents, plus unpredictable mountain weather

Highest point: Ala Kul Pass, 3,920 m

Start: Karakol National Park Entrance, 6km from Karakol

Finish: Ak Suu Village, 11km from Karakol

When to hike: During summer from end of June until end of September
