Sheep Mountain, located in the Kluane National Park in Yukon, Canada, offers a remarkable adventure to hikers with its 1,953-metre (6,407 foot) elevation gain! The mountain gets its name from the Dall sheep that often inhabit it. It is known as Thechàl Dhâl by the Southern Tutchone people, meaning “Skin Scraper Mountain” -- referring to the flat stone scraper they used to prepare animal hides. Climbing this summit will reward adventurers with stunning views up the Slims River Valley, south to Vulcan Mountain, and 2.4 km (1.5 mi) northwest to Mount Wallace, Sheep Mountain's nearest neighbor. This strenuous 11 km (6.8 mi) loop path grants access to the summit and is sure to satisfy any ambitious climber.

Eryn's Tips:

  • An important reminder that Sheep Mountain is located in Kluane National Park. This means you cannot remove ANYTHING from within the park. Even if you find a cool rock and want to take it home with you, it is illegal to remove anything from a national park so leave it behind and protect the natural beauty of this place :)

  • There are multiple different hiking loops you can complete in this area and all will reward you with STUNNING views. You can get more in depth information on the different hikes here.

  • This region has a very healthy grizzly bear population so always be bear aware and bring your bear spray! (Again, this is a national park so no guns are permitted).
