You don’t need to fly to Bali or book a week in the sun to feel like you’re on holiday.
In and around Oslo, there are so many cool and unique places to stay that it’s almost embarrassing we don’t use them more often. From treetop cabins with fjord views to urban hostels with rooftop bars — here are some of my favorite places, collected after three years of research for my book about Oslo’s hidden gems:

IN THE HEART OF OSLO

1. Bunks at Road – affordable, social and right in the city
This is one of the very few hostels in Norway — and honestly, it really surprised me in the best way. You get budget-friendly accommodation right in the center of Oslo, with access to a bar, cinema, kitchen, workspaces, chill-out areas, and one of the city's best rooftops. They also host plenty of social activities — perfect if you're traveling solo or just want to meet new people.

You can choose between dorm beds or book simple, stylish private rooms with kitchens and space for 1 to 5 people.

2. Scandic Holmenkollen Park Hotel – luxury with a fairytale feel
This historic hotel looks like something straight out of a fairytale. Here you’ll find a spa, panoramic views over Oslo, beautiful rooms, and hiking trails right outside the door.

Other good places to check out?
If you’re on a budget, take a look at Cochs Pensjonat, Anker Apartment, Citybox, Topcamp Bogstad, Topcamp Ekeberg, or Oslo Hostel Rþnningen — all great and affordable options.

If you’re looking for something more luxurious, treat yourself to a stay at The Thief, Amerikalinjen, or Grand Hotel — three hotels that offer something truly special in the heart of the city.

MINI ADVENTURES JUST OUTSIDE OSLO

3. WonderInn Riverside – jacuzzi, sauna and alpacas
About an hour from Oslo — and under 25 minutes from the airport — you’ll find this little gem by the Vorma River. You stay in mirrored cabins with private jacuzzis and saunas, surrounded by cute farm animals and peaceful nature. (Yes, you can actually see alpacas from your cabin window.) Perfect for a romantic escape or a relaxing weekend with friends.

4. WonderInn Delta – possibly the most stunning view in Norway?
This is one of the most wish-listed listings on all of Airbnb — and for good reason. WonderInn Delta is a hidden glamping treasure tucked into nature, yet only about 30 minutes from Oslo. You get a mirror cabin with a gorgeous view over the water, a private hot tub, and an outdoor area with a fire pit and grill — perfect for long, cozy evenings under the stars.

There’s also a separate annex with extra sleeping space if you're a bigger group. It's luxury and wilderness in perfect harmony — honestly, one of the most magical getaways near Oslo.

5. HvilePust – small cabins, big peace
Dreaming of a break from the noise of the city? HvilePust offers unique glass igloos nestled in the beautiful landscapes of Eastern Norway. These igloos combine comfort and nature in the best way, letting you slow down and reconnect. All just a short journey from Oslo.

Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Åsbygda Panorama – 64 km from Oslo
After a 15-minute hike, you’re rewarded with a private igloo and panoramic views, right by the hiking areas of Nordmarka.

  • KrĂžderfjordens Bredd – 100 km from Oslo
This igloo sits right by the water, perfect for a morning swim or just soaking in the views of fjords and mountains.

6. Konglehytta Igluhut – like sleeping inside a pine cone (or a hobbit house)
Konglehytta is one of Norway’s most charming mini cabins — shaped like a giant pine cone, just an hour from Oslo. It comes with views over Lake Mjþsa, a private sauna, and top-level comfort. The cabin is handcrafted in wood with a cozy living room, kitchen, bathroom, and a terrace with a grill and firepit.

The newest pine cone cabins also have a small annex, so up to four people can stay. It’s like stepping into a storybook — perfect for couples, friends, or anyone wanting something completely different.

7. Treetop Cabins by Oslofjorden – wake up to birdsong and fjord views
If you've ever dreamed of sleeping high up in the trees with a view over the Oslofjord, these cabins are for you. They offer the perfect mix of comfort and nature, and the whole experience feels like a mini adventure. Located just outside Horten, a little over an hour from Oslo.

Waking up here with a cup of coffee on the terrace while the sun rises over the fjord? Pure magic.

8. Simonstranda Treetop Cabin – sunflowers, local culture and forest charm
This unique treetop cabin sits in the middle of a blooming sunflower field. Simonselva is full of charm, and the area around it is packed with cultural experiences and fun things to do. A real hidden gem for those who want peace and activities in one stay.

9. VISIT LAAGEN – treetop cabin, micro cabins and sweeping views

Laagen is a great spot to disconnect — or reconnect, if you’re looking for a creative work retreat. There’s a treetop cabin, several cozy micro cabins, and a larger building with panoramic views that’s perfect for meetings, workshops or simply a quiet weekend away. Everything is beautifully located by the Laagen river, deep in the forest in the heart of Vestfold.
